"Three sardines on a plate. A meal almost as old as the sea itself."

Three sardines rest on a plate surrounded by lemon and sprigs of thyme, rendered in luminous colour against a deep midnight background with pops of phthalo blue and green, and forms edged in gold. This is an original acrylic on paper from The Mediterranean Table, part os Luna Burlo's Works on Paper series.

For millennia, fish has been the lifeblood of Mediterranean communities. Surrounded by sea, coastal villages from Malta to Greece to the South of France built entire cultures around the daily catch. Fish was not a luxury but a lifeline, freely given by the sea and shared at the table without ceremony. The sardine, small and abundant, fed generations. Paired here with lemon and thyme (the simplest, most honest of accompaniments) this painting is a tribute to the enduring relationship between Mediterranean people and the sea that has always sustained them.

One of just twelve originals in this collection, painted on 210gsm paper and hand-trimmed to approximately 42 x 54.5cm. A slight variation of up to 0.5cm in height may occur — a natural characteristic of a hand-finished work.

Sophisticated character. This painting brings depth, warmth, and a quietly playful energy to any space it calls home.

Framing We recommend professional framing to honour this original work. As a cost-effective alternative, a standard 50 x 70cm frame with a 40 x 50cm mat board works beautifully — note that a few centimetres of the painting's top and bottom edges will sit behind the mat, however most works in this series have been composed with this in mind.

This painting is part of a coordinating set of four, alongside "Garlic", "Oyster", and "Honey and Oil" Each shares the same deep midnight ground, luminous colour, and gold edging. Collect one or collect them all.
