Deborah Lang (Debstar)

Deborah Lang, also known as Debstar, works from her home-based studio in Brisbane. Known for her use of bold colour and mixed media, including works created on book pages. Her artworks are held in commercial and residential spaces throughout Australia and internationally.
A self-taught artist, Deborah’s creative journey began with a deep love of working with timber. Originally upcycling and restoring furniture, she progressed to creating artworks on reclaimed wood and feather wall hangings. When she couldn’t find a painting she loved for her own home, she created an abstracted beachscape on canvas, an experience that sparked a passion for painting that she has continued to pursue ever since.
Deborah is driven by experimentation, constantly exploring texture, materials, and subject matter as a way of maintaining creative energy and evolving her practice. Her works are richly textured, with subjects that seem to emerge from the canvas. Drawing inspiration from the world around her, she finds beauty in simplicity and the everyday. Nature, birds and animals, landscapes, and elements of pop art recur throughout her body of work.

Her latest collection, Lumière, marks a return to moody, abstracted landscapes on timber panels. This collection shifts toward a refined sense of quiet luxury. Crafted on wood panels, the works evoke a symphony of light, texture, and emotion, with layered pigments, rich surfaces, and subtle metallics creating depth, movement, and introspection.
For Deborah, art is intrinsically tied to joy and purpose. She hopes her work conveys the happiness she feels while creating it, offering viewers a moment of connection - whether that is a smile, a sense of calm, or quiet solace.
As she reflects through the words of her favourite artist, Leonardo da Vinci: “A beautiful body perishes, but a work of art dies not.”
