The Robe Obelisk was erected on Cape Dombey in 1855. Sadly, climate change has caused higher waves, rising sea levels and bigger storms. As a result, the cliff that the Robe Obelisk stands on has eroded away over the years. It is predicted that eventually it will crumble and wash out to sea.
The community of Robe are considering building a replica and placing it in another location. I visited Robe back in 2017 when I took the reference photo for this painting. I assume the cliff has eroded even more since then.
