In this work, I reflect on movement, rhythm, and my experience of observing a culture that is not my own. As a non-Aboriginal artist, I approach this subject with respect and awareness of distance — I am not depicting a specific story or ceremony, but rather my impression of energy, connection to land, and collective motion.
The figures are intentionally simplified and expressive. Their bodies are marked with rhythmic lines inspired by the visual language I have encountered, but not replicated directly. I was interested in how movement can carry meaning — how gesture alone can suggest continuity, memory, and presence.
The contrast between the warm tones of the figures and the cooler, vertical background creates a tension between immediacy and distance. The landscape is not a literal place, but a feeling — something observed, interpreted, and filtered through my own perspective.
I worked with loose, fast brushstrokes to keep the painting alive and unresolved. This approach reflects my position as an outsider: I am not defining or explaining, but responding — trying to hold onto a fleeting sense of motion and atmosphere without claiming ownership of its deeper cultural meaning.
