Every weekday, millions of us step onto escalators, trains and elevators on autopilot… straight into another day of meetings and deadlines.
When I painted this piece, I imagined what would happen if that everyday escalator didn’t lead to another shopping mall or office tower – but straight into the quiet of a forest instead.
“Escalator Escape” is my little reminder that we’re allowed to want more than hustle and fluorescent lights. We’re allowed to step off the track and choose trees, birdsong and stillness – even if, for now, it’s just with our eyes and imagination.
If you’re someone who lives in spreadsheets but dreams of moss and waterfalls, this one was painted with you in mind.
Where would your escalator lead if you could choose?
'Escalator Escape' won second prize at the 2026 'Outside the Lines' exhibition at the Port Community Arts Centre, Port Adelaide
