Ephemeral

Ephemeral

“Beauty is not always found in perfection, but in the things that are constantly changing.”

Ephemeral is a tribute to Australia’s extraordinary salt lakes and the fleeting colours and patterns that make each one so unique.

Inspired by the beautiful variations of pink found across these landscapes, I wanted to explore more than just the colour itself. Soft blush, dusty rose and pale pinks move across the canvas, interrupted by earthy tones, subtle textures and darker details.

Salt lakes are rarely the picture-perfect landscapes we sometimes imagine. They exist within a much broader natural environment, surrounded by farmland, scrub and weathered vegetation. Their surfaces can reveal fallen trees, remnants of plant life and the marks of changing seasons. These imperfections are part of their character, and I wanted them to have a place in this painting.

The colours of these lakes are never permanent. They shift with rainfall, evaporation, mineral concentrations and changing conditions, meaning no two visits — or views — are quite the same.

For me, Ephemeral is about appreciating that fleeting beauty and recognising that the landscape doesn’t need to be perfect to be extraordinary.
