Bruges

Bruges explores a quiet architectural moment in which light, shadow and space become more important than the buildings themselves. A narrow passage is almost entirely absorbed by deep shadow, while warm reflected light catches the surrounding walls and the small details that remain visible within the darkness. Across the passage, a brightly illuminated façade emerges in strong contrast, its windows, doorway and architectural geometry providing a sense of structure and scale.

A solitary figure stands almost unnoticed within the open doorway. Small in relation to the surrounding architecture, the figure introduces a human presence without becoming the focus of the painting. The lantern and isolated areas of reflected light similarly act as small points of recognition within an otherwise restrained composition.

The painting is deliberately reduced. Rather than describing every surface and architectural detail, I have tried to retain only those elements that contribute to the sense of place, light and space. The large areas of darkness are therefore not simply unpainted or empty areas, but an essential part of the composition.

As with much of my work, Bruges is less concerned with recording a particular view than with the experience of being in that space: the sudden contrast between shadow and sunlight, the unexpected warmth of reflected colour, and the quiet presence of someone passing through an otherwise still environment.
