An Invitation To Tea and Cake

An Invitation To Tea and Cake is a large oil painting exploring the possibility of reconciliation. A gathering of mysterious, almost dreamlike figures are brought together around the simple rituals of tea and cake. At first glance, the scene feels whimsical, but beneath it's playful surface there are tensions beweeen separation and belonging, difference and understanding. The figures appear to inhabit different worlds, yet the shared tables, cup and flowing streams of tea create unexpected connections between them. A crowned woman offers a gesture of prayer or welcome, while another figure arrives bearing a birthday cake, suggesting celebration, generosity and the possibility of beginning again. Rich purples and luminous yellows create a warm symbolic atmosphere, while the animals andfantastical forms add a touch of humour and mustering.  Ultimately the painint is an invitation to put aside our diference, sit together, listen and discover what we may have in common.
