This charming little parrot is now critically endangered. Only slightly larger than a budgie, it breeds in a small pocket of southwest Tasmania during summer before migrating to the southern coasts of Victoria and South Australia in autumn and winter. Fewer than 100 remain in the wild, placing the species at grave risk of extinction.
There is still hope. A dedicated captive‑breeding program is working to bolster their numbers, with some birds already being released back into their natural habitat. With continued support, their future may yet brighten.
The artwork’s composition echoes the image of Christ on the cross, with a rusty nail beneath symbolising the many species we are losing—and the urgent question of how we can help pull them back from the edge.
