The Season Turns

Every garden I grew up with seemed to have agapanthus. My mother never called them agapanthus though—they were simply "Aggers". Their familiar blue flowers became part of the rhythm of every Australian summer and are woven into some of my earliest memories of home.

Rather than painting the plant from a distance, I wanted to step inside it. Enlarging the forms transforms ordinary flowers into an immersive landscape of colour, where cool blues and violets contrast with the rich warmth of a single fading bloom. Familiar becomes monumental, and something we walk past every day becomes worthy of quiet attention.

This painting celebrates the abundance of summer gardens—their colour, generosity and the memories they quietly hold. It brings that feeling indoors, filling a room with light, warmth and the richness of a garden at its peak.
