Reverie

‘Reverie’

Inspired by my photograph, Samphire Divide

“There is beauty in what the eye almost misses.”

Reverie is a quieter piece, built from soft whites, muted greens, earthy tones and gentle flashes of yellow and orange.

Those warmer colours are drawn directly from the landscape in Samphire Divide — the natural tones found within the brackish waters and the areas where samphire grows. Against the cooler greens, whites and darker earthy marks, they bring small moments of warmth and energy across the surface.

I worked between brush and palette knife throughout the painting, allowing some areas to remain soft and atmospheric while others carry more texture and movement. The balance between the two gives the painting a sense of depth without overwhelming its quieter character.

The inspiration came from my aerial photograph Samphire Divide, captured at St Kilda, South Australia. It was the subtle combination of colour, texture and natural forms within that landscape that stayed with me and became the foundation for this piece.

There is a calmness to this one that I really love.
