The Brisbane Customs House was built at the northern end of the city on the Brisbane River between 1886 and 1889. This painting is a cropped, almost intimate study of the classical dome rendered in soft, muted tones. The large copper dome with its leaf-like crown is an iconic landmark. The background is a dusky salmon instead of blue sky to give the painting a slightly surreal quality. I am hoping this image feels calm and considered, an exercise in shape and colour.
This artwork is signed on the bottom left side of the frame, and a certificate of authenticity is supplied.
