Lake Cowan is an expansive salt lake near Norseman, in the WA Goldfields. Its beauty and expansiveness is a popular tourist stop. Along the Eyre Highway, about 7 km from Norseman in Western Australia, you will find Lake Cowan, one of the largest salt lakes in Australia. Lake Cowan holds spiritual and cultural significance to the local Aboriginal people and is used to farm salt and support agriculture.
While most of the time Lake Cowan gives a dazzling show of white, this particular day it received a typical Goldfields downpour – brief but heavy rain which quickly saturated the arid land. After the clouds receded I was treated to a stunning blue sky, juxtaposed against the rich earthy red of the now soaked lake.
Lake Cowan’s expansive beauty humbles those who venture into this natural wonder.
