During the creation of In the Now, I explored the discipline of presence. I considered how to anchor attention and what practices I could draw upon from my personal repertoire of wellbeing tools to remain grounded in the moment.
Sustaining awareness in the present requires deliberate and ongoing effort. Within this work, line, colour, and form became practical anchors. The act of tracing flowing lines and responding to shifting colour relationships provided a way to return my focus whenever the mind began to wander.
As I moved through the layered surface of the painting, I observed the natural tendency of thought to drift. Each time, I consciously redirected attention back to the immediacy of the abstract expression before me. This process of noticing and returning is embedded within the work itself.
The resulting composition reflects both movement and stillness. It holds the tension between distraction and awareness, offering a visual meditation on presence. Viewers are invited to engage in a similar process: to notice where their attention goes and gently guide it back to the sensory experience of colour, line, and form.
