Flickering Light

Flickering Light is a large-scale abstraction that translates the transient experience of sunlight filtering through trees into a richly layered field of colour and gesture. At 90 x 122cm, the vertical format enhances the sense of standing within a wooded space, looking upward as light fractures and shifts across foliage.

The composition is built from repeated, rounded brush marks in varied tones — soft peach, muted teal, deep burgundy, sky blue, sage green, cream, and charcoal — scattered across a ground of flowing, vertical striations. These underlying bands of blended colour move in gentle currents, suggesting tree trunks or shafts of light dissolving into one another. The surface feels alive with motion; nothing is static, and the eye is encouraged to travel continuously across the canvas.

The layered dabs of paint function as both leaves and fragments of illumination. Some passages are darker and denser toward the lower portion, grounding the work, while lighter tones gather toward the centre and upper areas, evoking the shimmer of sunlight breaking through canopy. The interplay between opacity and translucency creates depth without literal representation.

In Flickering Light, the artist captures not a specific landscape but a sensation — the shifting, ephemeral rhythm of light in motion.
