This large oil painting was inspired by a photograph I captured at Halls Gap Zoo. Lying on the ground with my camera, I was able to capture these emu chicks from their level, creating a more intimate view of two curious young birds. I found their innocent expressions and close relationship irresistibly endearing, and I wanted to paint that moment on a much larger scale.
At 102cm high by 76cm wide, the painting gives these chicks a strong presence while retaining the gentle, playful nature of the original encounter. I chose to paint the chicks in contrasting colour tones, with one emerging in cool blues and the other in warm yellows and earthy browns. This use of colour adds a contemporary element to the work while highlighting the individual personality of each chick.
