The heritage roses that bloom throughout my garden have long been a source of inspiration for both my paintings and my ceramics. Their changing forms, rich colours and remarkable fragrance provide an endless opportunity to observe nature's quiet beauty through the seasons.

While many people are drawn to the perfect rosebud, I have always been fascinated by the flower as it reaches full bloom. As each petal unfolds, the rose reveals an intricate architecture of overlapping forms, flowing curves and subtle transitions of colour that are often overlooked. It is this moment of maturity—when the bloom has become most expressive—that I find most compelling.

This close-up composition allows the rose to fill the canvas, inviting the viewer to explore its sculptural qualities and the extraordinary complexity hidden within a single flower. Layers of transparent acrylic capture the rich crimson, magenta and violet tones, while carefully observed light and shadow reveal the velvety texture and delicate movement of each petal.

My fascination with flowers extends across all of my work. Whether illustrating porcelain vessels, painting in watercolour or creating larger acrylic works, I return continually to botanical subjects as a celebration of nature's elegance and endless variety.
