Sometimes the truest step forward is the one that first carries us back toward what still needs to be gathered.

We often imagine progress as a straight road leading steadily forward. We expect each decision to carry us farther from where we began, each season to leave the last one permanently behind. Yet life rarely unfolds with such precision.

There are times when moving forward requires us to turn around.

We may need to return to a responsibility we avoided, a promise we failed to keep, a relationship we neglected, or a part of ourselves we abandoned in our hurry to become someone new. At first, this can feel like failure. We look back and wonder whether we have lost ground.

But not every step backward is a retreat.

Sometimes it is an act of courage.

The stockmen in this painting have already travelled ahead. Yet when they see sheep lagging behind, they circle back. The work cannot be completed simply by pressing onward and ignoring what has been left behind. The journey only succeeds when the scattered are gathered and the whole flock can move together.

There is wisdom in recognising when something unfinished still asks for our attention.

Pride urges us to keep going and pretend the past no longer matters. Wisdom tells us that what is neglected does not disappear. It waits. It shapes the road ahead until we are willing to turn toward it.

Circling back does not erase the distance already travelled. Nor does it mean that the original direction was wrong. It simply acknowledges that progress is not measured only by how far ahead we move, but by how completely and honestly we make the journey.

The return may take us through shadow. It may require humility, patience and work that no one else sees. Yet there is dignity in going back for what matters. There is strength in repairing what can still be repaired. There is hope in discovering that a course can be corrected.

The strongest people are not those who never lose their way. They are those who can recognise what has been left behind, turn without bitterness, and recover it with purpose.

Life is not diminished by these backward steps. Often, it is deepened by them.

For when we finally move forward again, we do so with greater wholeness, clearer understanding and fewer things calling to us from behind.
