There is a white gum tree in my backyard that stands against a fence, and I’ve always thought it deserved to be part of a landscape. It is so beautiful and so tall that when I stood beneath it, it seemed to bend above me. That moment became the starting point for this painting — a huge canvas almost as tall as I am. I adore the Australian landscape, but I also like to bend the truth a little, exaggerating what I see and allowing the trees, colour and landscape to become slightly quirky. Bent is my version of that tree: familiar, recognisably Australian, but perhaps a little more dramatic than nature intended.
