Bellona depicts a quiet courtyard in Venice, where an ancient statue of Bellona, the Roman goddess of war, stands almost hidden among dense foliage and deep shadow.
I was drawn to the contrast between the stillness of the courtyard and the presence of the sculpture. Bellona emerges from the darkness into the warm light of the wall behind her, while a vivid blue opening at the edge of the composition offers a glimpse beyond the enclosed space.
The painting is less about the historical figure represented by the statue than about the encounter itself — the way an unexpected object, discovered in an ordinary place, can suddenly alter our perception of that place. The dense foliage, strong shadows and small areas of colour create a sense of something half remembered, where the boundary between architecture, sculpture and memory becomes uncertain.
