Basilica explores the transformative effect of light on the urban landscape, where everyday architecture takes on an unexpected sense of monumentality. Inspired by a familiar Sydney streetscape, the painting is less concerned with documenting a specific location than with revealing the quiet drama created by the interplay of light, shadow and geometric form.

Through a process of reduction, architectural detail is simplified into broad planes of colour and tone, allowing the composition to focus on space, rhythm and atmosphere. A solitary figure introduces a human presence that provides both scale and a moment of quiet reflection, reinforcing the relationship between the individual and the built environment.
