Well, I find this absolutely amazing that this print has surfaced years after the actual painting had been finished. I had made the prints some years back and placed them between two sheets of Corflute and taped them up to protect them. At the time my website wasn't shop ready and so I placed them in a safe place and promptly forgot all about them. Rediscovered recently, I'm now offering this limited edition print to aviation art collectors, particularly the loyal Ansett employees...
The approach into Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport that opened in 1925 and closed in 1998. The famous "checkerboard" approach was one of the last remaining thrills in civil aviation. The Checkerboard Turn required pilots to fly low over the rooftops of Kowloon City and make a sharp, visual 47-degree turn at low altitude near Checkerboard Hill to align with runway 13. For passengers and crew, it offered an amazing view into the streets and even nearby houses. Very often you could see people watching tv as the planes roared passed.
