There are days when simply keeping your head above water feels like an achievement.
Against the Tide captures a determined dog paddling through the ocean, viewed from water level as the waves rise and tumble around him. Beneath the surface, fish glide by seeminly oblivious to his efforts, while a red and white channel marker bobs in the distance. Above, three seagulls circle together, watching the scene unfold.
The limited palette of teal sky and watercreates a calm, almost dream-like setting and allowing the dog to become the unexpected hero of the composition. Yet the waves tell another story - this is not quite the easy swim he imagined.
As with much of my work, I enjoy finding strength and humour in an ordinary moment, giving the characters a story of their own. The dog's determined paddle becomes a reminder that somethimes we are all simply doing our best to keep moving forward even when the tide is working against us.
