Sherwood Hall in Elwood was said to be built in 1890/91 for the proprietor of the Age newspaper.
I painted this work originally for an exhibition that paid homage to the 1889 impressionist exhibition in Melbourne and this is painted on a 9 x5 inch board ( the same size used by the impressionists for the original exhibition).
I wanted to include subjects that exist in the present day but were present during the era of the original exhibition. It helps me imagine what life might have been like in that time as I delve into history.
I have painted a view of a side gate in the morning light. I was particularly enchanted by the terracotta pots and the flowers in the sunlight. I particularly loved how the purple flowers in the nearer pot almost glowed in the light. My viewpoint is from just under a large tree on the edge of the property and I liked the effect of almost looking through the leaves from shade to bright sunlight.
The artwork is signed on the bottom right and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
