Unique to five Aboriginal tribes in the Kimberley region of NW Australia, Wandjina are sacred spirits associated with rain/water/life. They're often depicted on rock faces near waterways and with large amounts of white ochre (to some extent they resemble the rain clouds arriving in the wet season). Their heads show lines of lightning, their chests adorned with dark ornaments representing thunder, their garments with lines of rain. Typically, they have no mouths as it's belived the rain would never stop if they did.Â
This large group of Wandjina cover a 3 by 2m area of rockface & occur at Wunnumurra Gorge near the Gibb River Road.Â
