I was recently on a cruise to New Zealand. As we were leaving Port Chalmers near Dunedin, we cruised past this incredible headland. The lighthouse and nearby buildings caught my attention but so did the grey structure higher up on the hill. I couldn't work out what it was.

It was only on returning to Australia that I discovered it was the Royal Albatross Centre and that a colony of over 100 royal albatrosses had set up a breeding ground there in 1919. It is apparently the only such colony in the world on inhabited mainland.

When I looked at my photo more closely I could see birds circling in the sky and even some on the ground below the Centre - what a pity I was filming through dirty cruise ship windows!

Painted using professional watercolour paints on 300 gsm watercolour paper which is 100% cotton and acid-free.
