I find a real beauty in the Coraki, practical to the max and she has seen some hard work. Moored in Cabbage Tree Creek near Brisbane I took my first first good hard look at a working prawn trawler and then decided I had to paint several, the Coraki being the first.

Not just the Coraki but many working boats have gas bottles, eskys, bicycles, bins and tools on the roof of the cabin. The decks are loaded with winches, cables, booms, ropes and rigging.

In the painting I have tried to convey some of this busy and challenging work place. While the gas bottles are strapped on next to what looks like a cupboard and a small dingy, the gas pipe hangs over the side of the roof. Ropes and rigging for nets are numerous. However, even in a harsh environment, cafe curtains in the bridge bring some homely feel to the boat.
