Hello, I'm MARIAN QUIGLEY.
Formerly a secondary art and craft teacher, Marian went on to pursue her interest in writing, gained a PhD in English and taught Media and Communications at Monash University. She rediscovered her love of painting following her retirement and began exhibiting her work in 2009. Her distinctive painting style incorporates hard edge minimalism; elements of abstraction and vibrant colour. Her formative influences include the Post Impressionists; the simplicity and bold design of Japanese woodcuts and the organic, flowing line of Art Nouveau. The Australian painter Jeffrey Smart is a more recent influence. A resident of Phillip Island since 1987, Marian’s subject matter includes sea, land and cityscapes as well as portraits and wildlife. Her migration series was inspired by her parents' stories concerning their migration by sea in the 1950s. Her current series focuses on Melbourne architectural and structural icons. Marian has been a finalist in a number of national art awards including the ANL Maritime Award; Portia Geach Memorial Award; SBS Portrait Prize; Hurford Hardwood Portrait Prize and Lethbridge Small Scale Art Award. Her work was exhibited in the Affordable Art Fair, Melbourne in 2023, 2024 and 2025. She held a successful solo exhibition in 2024 and is preparing for another in 2025. Her work is held in private collections in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
