This painting depicts a Highlands tribesman from Papua New Guinea, which, for the uninitiated, is the land of the unexpected. Similar tribesmen can be seen showing off their colourful traditional attire at the spectacular Mount Hagen Cultural Festival. At same you can witness what this ancient nation has to offer in terms of a wide diversity of song, dance, and traditional dress of stunning colours. Prior to relocating to Perth, I spent 10 fantastic years living in Papua New Guinea, by far the best years of my life. Our three sons were all born in PNG. From the lush and rugged highlands of Papua New Guinea, this warrior stands proudly adorned in vibrant tribal regalia that reflects the rich cultural heritage of his people. His face is accentuated and elaborately decorated with intricate body paint made from natural pigments, showcasing his ancestry, and connection to the land. Bright red and yellow dyes derived from native plants highlight his fierce gaze that exudes confidence and determination.
