The scene depicts horses and buggies picking up and dropping off passengers on the Palmerston to Pine Creek railway which connected Port Darwin with the Pine Creek Gold Fields. The passengers platform is in the foreground. In the middle distance are the railway workshops. To the left is Stokes Hill and to the right Fort Hill. The first locomotive to use the railway was the Port Darwin, christened in early 1895.
